Meet Lantern: A Honduran Coffee Inspired by Sanna Wani’s New Book
We’re excited to introduce Lantern, a limited-release Honduran coffee created in collaboration with poet Sanna Wani, to celebrate her new book of the same name.
Sanna Wani is a Kashmiri award-winning poet, editor, and translator based in Toronto. She is the author of My Grief, the Sun (House of Anansi Press, 2022) and Lantern (House of Anansi Press, 2026). Her writing has been widely published, including in TIME and Best Canadian Poetry. She is the creator and host of the podcast, Poet Talk; poetry editor at The Ex-Puritan; and Publicity Manager at Between the Lines.
Published by House of Anansi Press, Lantern is Sanna’s second collection of poetry. The book explores love, home, belonging, and the beauty found in everyday life.
Coffee is part of everyday life too. It gives us a reason to pause, sit together, or spend a quiet moment on our own.

The farmer behind the coffee
Lantern was grown by Juan Adolfo Bautista, a second-generation coffee producer in Musula, a community in Marcala, La Paz, Honduras.
Juan’s farm, Finca San Juan, sits between 1,500 and 1,626 MASL. He grows several coffee varieties, including Lempira, IHCAFE 90, Parainema, Red Pacas, and Catuai.
The coffee we purchased is a small natural-process Catuai microlot grown at approximately 1,500 metres. After picking, the whole coffee cherries were carefully dried on shaded solar beds and patios.
This process brings out the coffee’s fruit and sweetness. In the cup, you can expect notes of berries, peach, and red fruits, with bright acidity and a lingering sweetness.
Working toward better harvests
During the 2025–2026 season, Juan focused on regenerating parts of his farm and introducing new coffee varieties. He also achieved his goal of having all his coffees meet Strictly High Grown standards.
Like many coffee farmers, Juan is dealing with the effects of climate change. Unpredictable weather can affect everything from flowering and ripening to drying and processing.
Producing high-quality specialty coffee has helped create greater stability for Juan and his family. He successfully sold his entire harvest this season, and his longer-term goal is to continue improving the farm and earn a place in the Cup of Excellence.

How we found this coffee
We sourced Lantern through the Honduran Coffee Alliance, a social enterprise that works directly with Honduran producers and connects them with specialty coffee roasters.
The transparency report they provided allows us to follow the coffee’s journey and understand the role of the farmer, mill, exporter, importer, and other partners involved.
For us, sourcing coffee thoughtfully starts with knowing who grew it and how. It also means working with partners who are open about the supply chain and who want to build lasting relationships with producers.
We’re grateful to the Honduran Coffee Alliance for introducing us to Juan and making it possible for us to share his coffee with you.
Lantern
Sanna’s Lantern considers what it means to love, belong, and make a home.
Coffee is grown in one home and enjoyed in another. It travels a long way, passing through many hands before becoming part of someone’s morning or a conversation between friends.
A lantern also helps us notice what is around us. We hope this coffee & poetry collaboration draws attention to Juan and the work behind his coffee, while giving readers another way to experience Sanna’s poetry.
Coffee and writing workshop
To celebrate the launch, Sanna and Poets & Prose are hosting Coffee & Writing with Sanna Wani.
We’ll taste Juan’s coffee, and together, we’ll read coffee poems; talk about a few coffee books worth adding to your reading list; and explore writing prompts inspired by the everyday ritual. Led by Sanna Wani, this workshop is an opportunity to play with language, share ideas, and discover how our senses can become a starting point for creative work.
The workshop is open to everyone. You don’t need to be a writer or know anything about specialty coffee. Come for the coffee, stay for the poems, and leave with a few new words on the page.
